#33-Function & Design of Coastal Groins (2004) [Kraus & Rankin]

-A coastal groin is a rigid hydraulic structure built from an ocean shore that interrupts water flow and limits the movement of sediment. Coastal groins usually run perpendicular to the shore, extending into the water from the upper foreshore. Their general purpose is to create beaches, or to ultimately avoid having the beach wash away by longshore drift. This JCR Special Issue takes a look at the function and design of these coastal structures, especially how they relate to local wave energy and beach slope. Dr. Nicholas Kraus, research physical scientist for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers' Coastal & Hydraulics Laboratory, serves as one of the guest editors for this volume of publications.
